MEN’S HEALTH

OK guys, your turn.  Let’s talk about all the things you don’t want to talk about!  What are some of the things you should be focusing on in terms of health.

  • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, skin cancer being first!
  • African-American men have the greatest risk of developing prostate cancer.  A recommendation from the American Cancer Society suggests men screening at age 50.  Men with a higher risk should begin earlier.
  • Sexual health is a major concern for men.  1 in 4 men will experience some form of sexual health concern by age 65!
  • Erectile dysfunction and lower testosterone have been linked to larger health risks, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Americans are in a health crisis with our fast paced lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits and reduced time for exercise.  Chronic medical diseases are affecting everyone at earlier ages.  Managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease and high cholesterol are paramount in extending life.  Not addressing these issues early are leading to premature death of men in the prime of their life.

What is low testosterone?  This is the main male hormone responsible for reproductive development as a male, among other things.  The most recognizable symptoms of low testosterone is decreased sex drive, erectile difficulty, tiredness, mood changes and memory problems.

After age 40, the prostates grow or medically tagged as "benign prostate enlargement."  Symptoms include a slow urinary stream or a sudden urges to urinate.  An enlarged prostate increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK??

  • Get enough “good sleep”!  For the average adult, that means 7-9 hours of sleep. Insufficient amounts of sleep increases the risks health risks.   Poor sleep has been linked to motor vehicle and machinery-related accidents.
  • Quit smoking!  Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits. Also, avoid secondhand smoke which mimics the health problems of smokers.  Second hand smoke is more debilitating to small children and newborns, as they are still developing.       Smokefree.gov
  • Exercise - Adults need at least 2½ hours of moderate aerobic activity and weight training two or more days weekly.
  • Eat Healthy!  Stop laughing!!  Eating those carrots or fresh fruits for smacks to shut down those hunger cravings provide vitamins and minerals that help protect against chronic diseases. Limit your intake of foods and drinks that are high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol.
  • Let go of the stress!  Some stress is good, but is harmful to the body when constant causing you to feel overwhelmed or out of control. Simple solutions:  avoid drugs, alcohol, get a good support system, socialize, exercise or increase your activity.
  • Visit the doctor!  Some diseases do not present recognizable symptoms, but  can be diagnosed with regular checkups.   Don’t shrug off signs or symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst, and problems with urination. Don’t wait!
