Women’s Heart Health
Last year in February we talked about heart health; to review please feel free to look in the Archives section of our blog.
I decided to continue the theme of heart health this month but focus specifically on Women’s Heart Health. Nearly 300,000 women per year suffer and die from heart attacks. This is 10 times more than the number of women dying of breast cancer; yet for some reason this astounding fact is overlooked by both women and their doctors. Symptoms are overlooked because heart attacks often manifest differently in women than in men.
Let’s discuss those symptoms. Heart attacks in women can manifest as jaw pain; pain in the roof of your mouth, clamminess (often mistaken for hot flashes); anxiety combined with nausea; also intense fatigue over several days. These are different from the traditional symptoms of left arm pain; crushing chest pain, and shortness of breath.
Women also tend to overlook their symptoms because we are the nurturers and often don’t look after ourselves. Know these symptoms; be aware; don’t panic but listen to your body.
Let’s discuss heart disease prevention.
First know your family history as far as heart disease is concerned; especially on your maternal side of the family.
Secondly a heart-healthy diet should consist of raw fruits and vegetables (or slightly steamed); lean meat and fish (plenty of fish); healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, and eggs (yes eggs, they are loaded with lecithin). Caffeine should be imbibed at a reasonable level. Drinking 4 oz. of red wine daily is very heart healthy as is dark chocolate 80% or higher cacao bean. Rule of thumb everything in moderation; including moderation! This brings us to our next topic; exercise.
The heart is a muscle and must be treated as such. Work it baby! I do yoga every day; and three days a week it is a flow program that works my heart muscle very well. Any aerobic type exercise like dancing; Zumba; roller skating; hula hooping; and water aerobics are super for your heart! Your heart really appreciates a brisk walk!
Finally ladies please try to reduce your stress level. Meditate; spend time with good friends, delegate chores; do not try to be everything to everyone. I know it is easier said than done but please try.
Let’s do a quick review of some supplements. Omega 3-6-9 formulas have the essential oils vital to women’s health; and for a healthy heart. Stress reducers include delicious Lavender Tea and products such as Lavender Calm. Finally, CO-Q 10 strengthens the heart and improves circulation; and hey; it’s anti-aging. Hallah! Until Next time; Take good care!
